It all started in the year 2008 when Master Ronith G. Mood turned a year old and we decided to adopt a government school and help with rural kids education than celebrating lavish birthdays. We chose the government school at my maternal village (thanda- hamlet) and donated steel plates and cups so that the students could enjoy their mid day meal in a hygienic environment. During the following years we provided the school with Blue board, benches, cup boards, shelfs, public announcement system, desktop computer.
In the year 2017 we installed a kindergarten playground with swing, merry go round, see-saw and others. This not only attracted pre school kids to enjoy in the school ground but also helped them to participate in the education curriculum. Now that Richa G Mood has joined the team, each year along with Ronith, they both enjoy their day outing with these school kids for some literary and sports activities. On June 5, 2019, we all celebrated environment day by planting more than 300 saplings in and around the thanda as well as along the streets entering the thanda.
In 2019, we started pre school along with english as a language to learn. Necessary textbooks were written and published by us, along with providing basic training for a pre school teacher to focus on english language education. Our bonding with the school and the kids have grown over the years and we were thrilled to see them not only perform well in their exams but they also outperformed local students in many sports events. We continue to forge our association with the teaching faculty so that they encourage more and more kids to join this government school which is providing free education for the students. This has eliminated the burden on the parents with regards to education expenses. We now see many students from nearby thanda (hamlet) join our school and reap the benefits.
Along with supporting the government school, we team started encouraging various activities in preserving our indigenous culture and traditions. We have sponsored few village families with expenses related to underground water drilling, so that they can grow crops all year round. We have also provided cattles (and livestocks) for village families so that they can live a self sustained life by selling milk at the dairy. This has helped them to manage their monthly expenses without depending on the loan sharks. Few families have been provided with seeds and fertilisers so that they can grow their yearly crops. Another way of saving families from loan sharks, who lend the seeds and fertilisers on high interest rates and when the crop yields, they are bought for cheaper price so as to clear the principle amount but the interest continues.
Our trust, was officially registered on Dec 31, 2019 as RR Seva Trust. This was further amended on March 18, 2020 as RR Naik Seva Trust. We continued our activities under the new banner and helped providing groceries to more than 1500 families during the initial lockdown for COVID. This was done in association with Global Gor Association, USA. During the second wave of COVID, we were able to distribute around 450 pulsoximeters and thermometers to the thandas in Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra and Maharashtra states.
Along with Global Gor Association and few donors, we are now sponsoring a female student from chennai with her medical education.
For the academic year 2021-22, we set aside Rs. 10,00,000 (Ten lakh rupees) to help talented rural kids with their preparation for competitive exams as well as few projects to support our indigenous culture and traditions. These 18 students were selected after rigorous process and interview.
Gor Banjara have no written scripts nor authenticated history. There are many tales to the story which are largely unproven. However, it is the “Gor Boli” language which unites us outside the thanda (hamlet) and across the ocean. At this juncture, there has been a publication on the collection of evidences depicting the life journey of this indigenous community during the period of Nizam of Hyderabad. This book has now been translated in Kannada language. Our trust is proudly sponsoring the book release ceremony at Courtyard Marriott, Bengaluru on March 27, 2022. This event is organised keeping in mind to encourage research graduates to pursue further investigative study on the journey of this tribe as well as to start an evidence based discussion on probable historical aspects. These findings will be utilised to formulate future course of action so as to help the tribe to manoeuvre upcoming challenges in this dynamic world.
